Skylar Cherry, 9, creates bold, unique outfits daily, drawing attention at school and on TikTok

Her mom, Tatianna Armfield, says Skylar’s love for fashion started as a baby and has grown over the years

Armfield believes supporting kids’ self-expression builds confidence, which Skylar showcases through her creative style

Every morning before school, Tatianna Armfield braces for a surprise.

She never knows what her 9-year-old daughter, Skylar Cherry, is going to walk out wearing, but she knows it will make a statement.

“She completely leads the process. I never know what she’s going to wear to school until that morning — she surprises me every single day,” Armfield, 31, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

From bold textures to standout accessories, Skylar’s outfits have turned everyday school mornings into something of a fashion moment, both in real life and online.

Armfield, a realtor who also works in legal operations in Memphis, Tenn., says her daughter’s love for style didn’t develop over time; it’s always been there.

“Even as a baby, she gravitated toward textures, colors and statement pieces — she’s been wearing faux furs since she was just a few months old," she says.

Now, nearly a decade later, that instinct has only grown stronger.

Each day, Skylar wakes up with a vision and executes it entirely on her own, from the outfit to the accessories.

“I don’t style her… I observe her," Armfield says.

“If anything, I’m just there to make sure the weather makes sense for the look!” the mom adds.

While Armfield admits her own love of fashion may play a role, she says Skylar has made the style entirely her own.

“Kids are like sponges — so when she sees how I style myself, she definitely takes inspiration and makes it her own,” she says.

“It’s so hard to choose [a favorite look] because every look is so unique, but I especially love when she leans into bold textures like her faux furs paired with unexpected accessories,” Armfield adds. “Those outfits really show her confidence and creativity.”

That confidence hasn’t gone unnoticed — and now, it’s reaching far beyond the classroom.

What started as Armfield simply documenting her daughter’s outfits on TikTok quickly grew into something much bigger. The very first video she posted went viral, and since then, Skylar’s looks have continued to draw attention online — mirroring the reaction she’s long received in real life.

“The kids at her school are always so amazed by her outfits, and now that same energy is happening online,” Armfield says.

For Skylar, the growing audience hasn’t changed the way she shows up each day — if anything, it’s only added to the fun.

“She loves the attention in a fun, innocent way—she just enjoys that people appreciate her style,” her mom says.

For Armfield, the response has reinforced something she’s believed all along: that confidence starts early, and grows when it’s supported.

“I hope people take away the importance of letting kids express themselves freely,” she says. “Confidence starts young, and when kids feel supported, they really shine in ways that you can’t teach.”

“She shows that style isn’t about following rules — it’s about being yourself and owning it unapologetically.”
