The success of the new viral LGBTQ hockey series Heated Rivalry is showing Connor Storrie that, actually, it's okay to meet your idols.
Storrie stars on the steamy Canadian sports drama as the arrogant and intimidating Ilya Rozanov, captain of the Boston Raiders ice hockey team. Sparks fly when he meets Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams), the comparatively shy captain of the rival Montreal Metros, whom he's not supposed to have anything beyond grudging admiration for. The two soon find themselves enrapt in a consuming love affair that has audiences around the world swooning, too, catapulting Storrie and Williams from relative obscurity to stardom.
During a recent appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Storrie learned his new audience includes one of his heroes. "I want to bring in the fantastically talented Andrew Scott, who has a question for you," host Evan Ross Katz announced to Storrie mid-interview, prompting a shocked, "What the f---?"

"Hello, Connor, it's Andrew here. Congratulations on the show," Scott told Storrie in a sweet pre-recorded message. As the 25-year old Texas native sat mouth agape in total shock, Scott continued, "All actors have other performers that they admire and look up to from childhood or from the start of their career, and I'm just wondering who that might be for you. And if you have any plans ever to do theater, or where you see yourself going after this enormous success."
"Oh my God," Storrie eventually reacted. "Wow, that's crazy. That's actually really crazy. I love him."
The actor explained that he actually knows Scott, or at least, could have gotten to know him, if he had the courage. "I actually used to work out at the Equinox" in West Hollywood, Calif., he explained. "I used to see him all the time, [but] never got up the courage to say hi."
Storrie finally addressed the question of his own models as an actor in the making: "I was always into the Buster Keaton sort of thing. I was super old school, the kind of like vaudevillian thing."
But he couldn't fully shake off the shock of receiving a personal message from Scott, the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated star of Fleabag, All of Us Strangers, Ripley, and more. "I still cannot believe that that happened, that that man knows who I am. That's crazy."

Storrie and Williams have been publicly processing their sudden ascents to fame since Heated Rivalry became a viral hit shortly after its late November release. In a Dec. 11 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Storrie recounted some of the wild social media posts and critical reactions to his bold performance in the series, recalling, "I think I saw someone say that I am 'America's ass,' which I was not expecting that at all. But, yeah, I love it. I'll take it. Feels good."
When asked by Katz about the very same comment, he explained, "The butt thing is interesting. I thought everyone would talk generally about the sex, but I didn't think people would take pictures of my butt and GIF-ify it."
The season 1 finale of Heated Rivalry airs Dec. 26 on the Canadian streaming service Crave, which is available through HBO Max.
