Marc Brown — creator of the beloved children’s book series Arthur, which was later developed into a hit TV series of the same name — has officially sold his sprawling Martha’s Vineyard home for $6.4 million after owning the property for 37 years.
The author-illustrator and his wife Laurene “Laurie” Krasny Brown, who is also an artist, first purchased the Vineyard Haven estate in 1988 for $700,000, according to property records. The couple spent more than three decades restoring the property and protecting its rich history, as it dates back to 1730 and was once part of a 225-acre farm.
Equipped with two artist studios, the home was where Marc penned half of the Arthur books, he told the Wall Street Journal. It served as a vacation home for their family, as their primary residence is in New York City.

While the home holds a special place in both his and his wife’s hearts, Marc said it was a “practical decision” to part ways with it, as they recently purchased a new home in New York’s Hudson Valley that they’re looking to restore.
The couple first listed their Martha’s Vineyard home, set on 7.8 acres of land, for $6.9 million in July 2025. The listing was held by Alexis Holden and Elle Lash of Tea Lane Associates/Forbes Global Properties.
“This property was the 37-year collaboration of two talented artists who poured their love and unique vision into the restoration and renovation of the farmhouse, and magical 7-acre setting,” Lash tells PEOPLE of the property.

Adds Holden, “Mark Brown and Laurie Krasny Brown are as wonderful in real life as you would imagine them to be, from reading their books and seeing their art… It was a pleasure working with them.”

The renovated antique farmhouse serves as the main home on the property and features five bedrooms and four bathrooms. It also boasts a screened porch overlooking the saltwater pool and tranquil greenery.
There are several outbuildings located on the grounds as well, including a two-bedroom, one-bathroom pool house. The carriage house is home to one of the art studios, located above the three-car garage.

The saltwater pool was one of the couple’s additions to the property, with their entire renovation of their now-former home costing millions of dollars, according to the WSJ. Marc told the outlet they were always looking for ways to make it even “more beautiful.”
“We’re both artists—we look at a space and it’s a composition,” he previously said. “It has the potential for objects to fill that negative space in a way that can make it more beautiful.”
