Chiefs players, including Travis Kelce, praised Bieniemy’s return and his intense, accountability-driven coaching style

Eric Bieniemy shared a positive update on his wife, Mia, who was allegedly shot by their son, Elijah, at their Ashburn, Va., home late last month.

“She’s on a great road to recovery,” the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, 57, said during a press conference on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Bieniemy also praised his wife’s strength amid the recovery process. “She is on a road to recovery. Yes, she is doing great,” he said. “It’s one of the main reasons why I’m back here because of her recovery. She’s truly a soldier, she’s a saint, and it’s been incredible to watch.”

“But with that said, I know I was driving her and a bunch of my family members crazy in the house,” he added with a laugh. “She was like, ‘You have my blessing to leave’. It was time to get back.”

Bieniemy missed 11 practices to be in Virginia with his wife, who was shot in the left forearm and shoulder with a .22-caliber firearm at home on July 26, according to a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News. She was hospitalized following the incident.

Elijah, the couple’s 27-year-old son, was arrested in connection with the incident and charged with three felonies, according to Loudoun County court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Bieniemy returned to Chiefs training camp on Monday, Aug. 10 following a two-week absence. He appeared to be in good spirits as he walked through the grounds at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo., as seen in various social media clips.

“One, you’ve got intensity. Intensity is the first thing and that intensity is infectious,” Kelce said of Bieniemy. “And I love that s---. It’s one of my favorite things about him. I don’t think there’s enough of that in the world, let alone in this building.”

The tight end said Bieniemy is “one of those guys where his accountability is gonna piss you off” before explaining, “But if you treat it the right way and you act the right way, respond the right way with it, you’re gonna become better, and it’s gonna make the team a better team.”

“It’s one of those things I think we really missed here in Kansas City,” he added.

Bieniemy is on his second run with the Chiefs after serving as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022.
