US on high alert for homeland attacks by Iran

As a war in Iran enters its third day Monday, U.S. counterterrorism agencies are on high alert for a potential retaliatory attack on American soil after U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes on Iran over the weekend that killed the nation's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other top officials.

USA TODAY has the latest on Iran: -

Three American service members have been killed, and five others have been seriously injured in the ongoing conflict. President Donald Trump warned of "more" U.S. combat deaths to come.

Trump faces MAGA backlash after pursuing strikes in Iran, while more than 70% of Americans polled since the attack either disapprove or were unsure about Trump's decision. Trump remains optimistic.

In Iran, the atmosphere Sunday in Tehran was a strange combination of quiet, terror, hidden joy and official mourning. Media and officials reported a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran struck a girls' primary school, killing 85.
