On the first Monday in May, Beyoncé will return to the famed steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, breaking her decade-long absence from fashion’s biggest night.

As a co-chair for the 2026 Met Gala, the artist will make her first appearance at the annual event since 2016—celebrating the Costume Institute’s forthcoming exhibition, “Costume Art,” alongside fellow hosts Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams. But while her impending red carpet moment may feel like a rare treat nowadays, it was not that long ago that Beyoncé was a staple fixture of Met Gala Mondays.

The star made her official Met Gala debut back in 2008, six months or so before her third studio album, I Am... Sasha Fierce, would hit iTunes and climb the charts. The theme for the evening was “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy,” and Beyoncé graced the carpet in a blush-pink Armani Privé gown, designed with a romantic strapless silhouette and pleated ruffle detailing.

Flash forward three years and she was there for six fundraisers in a row, beginning with the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” event in 2011, followed by 2012’s “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” edition, 2013’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” 2014’s “Charles James: Beyond Fashion,” 2015’s “China: Through The Looking Glass,” and, finally, the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” event in 2016. For this last appearance, she wore a custom latex gown from Givenchy.
