O’Shea Jackson Jr. teases the next heist setting for Gerard Butler’s Den of Thieves 3
O’Shea Jackson Jr. recently teased the potential new setting for Den of Thieves 3 during an exclusive interview with ScreenRant.
The actor, who plays heist mastermind Donnie Wilson opposite Gerard Butler’s Big Nick O’Brien, discussed the challenges of picking a new location. Jackson acknowledged that his character cannot return to the United States after robbing the Los Angeles Federal Reserve in the first film.
The sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, also eliminated Europe as an option after Donnie robbed the World Diamond Center. Jackson pointed out that he technically only has four other continents left for his character’s next heist. When presented with Japan as a possible setting, the actor expressed genuine enthusiasm for the idea but ultimately confirmed it will not be the location.

Jackson shared his excitement about the hypothetical Japanese setting during the conversation. He stated, “I think it would be so dope if I had a heist movie in Japan. Shoot it when the cherry blossoms are out there. Think of the shots you can have!” He added, “Also, I look sick with a katana. The cars that they got out there? It just makes sense.” His Idiots co-star Dave Franco then joked about a crossover between Den of Thieves 3 and Now You See Me 4 in Japan.
Despite ruling out Japan, Jackson’s comments still narrow down the possible settings for the threequel. African, South American, and other Asian regions remain viable options for Donnie’s next heist. Meanwhile, the first film’s ending teased a London diamond exchange job that Pantera never directly addressed. Lionsgate greenlit development for the threequel within weeks after Pantera’s release in 2025.
Jackson’s familiarity with the setting hints that the script may be taking shape under writer and director Christian Gudegast. Fans hope the wait between installments will be shorter than the seven-year gap separating the first two films.
