At long last, the so-called virtual band behind "Clint Eastwood" and other hits has dropped yet another groundbreaking album.
If you're a Gorillaz fan, maybe you had enrolled in Spotify's countdown feature so you could be alerted on Friday, Feb. 27 — the day The Mountain was released to the masses.
In addition to the 15-track LP, the Grammy-winning group led by Damon Albarn just unveiled an accompanying short film, titled "The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God," that features standout music from the new record. Check out the video below, which might remind fans of animated classics from their childhoods...
YouTube users have already flooded the comments section of Gorillaz' upload to show their appreciation for the short. "I love the nods to The Jungle Book, which is one of my favorite Disney films. It’s 2D animation like this that will be timeless," wrote one user, while another person commented, "Gorillaz did what Disney won't do: a proper love letter to 2D animation."

The Mountain as an album has been well received by critics and features a variety of guest artists, as is usual with Gorillaz LPs. Posthumous appearances include Bobby Womack, David Jolicoeur of De La Soul and even Dennis Hopper (yes, the actor). Also notable is how five different languages are featured on the record: English, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish and Yoruba.
Looking ahead, Gorillaz fans will be able to see the cartoon gang perform during Saturday Night Live on March 7, which is when Ryan Gosling is returning to host (in support of his new film Hail Mary). It will be the alternative band's big SNL debut, so mark your calendars!
Meanwhile, earlier this month, Consequence released its list of 100 Best Songs of 2001, in honor of the year's 25th anniversary. Gorillaz's smash-hit song "Clint Eastwood" impressively ranked at No. 2 on the sprawling list, topped only by Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On."
