Marshals picks up right where Yellowstone left off — with Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) forging a new path.

In the Yellowstone season 5 finale, Kayce makes the difficult decision to sell the majority of the Dutton family land to the Broken Rock Reservation, keeping only East Camp — a modest stretch of land where his family can live quietly and tend a small herd of cattle. He also turns in his badge as Montana’s Livestock Commissioner, closing the chapter on his official ties to the state.

When Marshals opens, Kayce and his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), are settling into life at East Camp. But any sense of peace is short-lived, as viewers learn that Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) has died — a devastating loss that casts a shadow over their attempt at a fresh start.

Kayce’s former Navy SEAL teammate, Pete "Cal" Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), arrives at East Camp to check in on his old friend. Now leading a team of U.S. Marshals in Montana, Cal ropes Kayce into a high-stakes case that requires navigating some of the state’s most rugged and remote terrain. Pulled back into a world he tried to leave behind, Kayce faces a familiar crossroads: stay on the land he fought to protect or pin on a new badge.

So, what happened in season 1, episode 1 of Marshals? Here’s a breakdown of everything that took place, from Monica Dutton's absence to Kayce Dutton's job offer.

How did Monica Dutton die?

Season 1, episode 1 of Marshals briefly addresses Monica’s death, suggesting she succumbed to cancer — an illness believed to be linked to toxins dumped by a nearby mine on the Broken Rock Reservation. The episode reveals that the contamination has been tied to multiple deaths, sparking outrage within the community.

A protest erupts on the reservation to demand accountability, and Kayce finds himself there in an unofficial capacity, quietly assisting the U.S. Marshals as tensions rise.

Concerned about the escalating situation, he urges Tate to head home before things turn volatile. But the teenager pushes back, reminding his father of what their family endured.

“After how much Mom suffered, you should be leading the charge, not waving the white flag,” Tate tells him.

Why did Owen Kilborn try to kill Thomas Rainwater?

Chaos erupts when a bomb detonates at the protest, seriously injuring Broken Rock chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham). As the U.S. Marshals investigate, they discover the homemade device was planted by Jim Kane, a member of the reservation who was acting under duress after his wife and daughter were taken hostage.

The team ultimately traces the attack back to Owen Kilborn, the director of Fish, Game and Parks, who orchestrated the plot from behind the scenes. Kayce, working alongside Cal’s unit, manages to rescue Kane’s family, and Kilborn is killed during the confrontation.

But before he dies, Kilborn delivers a chilling warning to Kayce: “You stopped nothing.” The ominous remark suggests the bombing was only one piece of a much larger plan still in motion.

Did Kayce Dutton officially join the U.S. Marshals?

Cal floats the idea of Kayce officially joining his U.S. Marshals team, which includes Andrea Santos (Ash Santos), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means).

Kayce initially resists, insisting he’s finally found peace on his ranch. But after rescuing Kane’s family, something shifts. Reflecting on the mission, he tells Rainwater and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty), “It was nice to kill for someone, rather than something.”

Rainwater and Mo appear to recognize what Kayce is still wrestling with — that he’s a protector at his core, and that Montana’s people still need him. Their words linger, ultimately pushing him to accept the U.S. Marshals badge.

Later, standing at Monica’s grave at East Camp, Kayce explains his decision. With his hand resting on her gravestone, he says, “You always told me to fight for the life I want, but I had the life I wanted, and it was with you. I’m changing paths. I’m going to try to find a new beginning for me and Tate.”
