Nathan Gallagher keeps leading with his emotions on Below Deck Mediterranean. And as Season 11’s bosun, that’s a problem. Bosuns need to lead with a firm and fair hand, but right from the jump, Nathan has struggled to hold both in tandem. If he doesn’t take a beat and really reflect on his reactions, his future in this franchise might sink.

As fans know, Nathan and Joe Bradley had a falling out somewhere between last season and this one. But on the flip side, Joe is a solid asset to the deck team. Even still, Nathan is less than thrilled to work with his former friend again, as many of his decisions suggest. That’s not at all how a leader in a job this serious should operate.

Yes, Joe is far from perfect. But Nathan is the leader, so he needs to learn how to rise above his typical knee-jerk reactions. Or else, the deck team will take on water, likely taking Nathan’s career down with it.

In Episode 4, Nathan made Joe his lead deckhand. But now that Max Salvador is back on board, Nathan is trying to make a new deal. If Max stands up for Nathan and goes against Joe, the lead deckhand job can be his. At least, that’s the offer Nathan just texted Max from offshore.

When Max got this offer, he understandably felt torn. Max and Joe are friends. Joe is also nailing his stint as acting bosun while Nathan is away from filming to take care of his reinjured back. Both Max and Captain Sandy Yawn have given Joe plenty of praise for stepping up, so Max knows Joe more than deserves to exit this position and walk right back into his spot as Season 11’s lead deckhand.

Still, Max is trying to better himself in this industry, and if he moves the way Nathan hopes, this title bump would do wonders for his career. But since the promotion has nothing to do with his skill set and everything to do with his ability to fall in line and kiss the proverbial ring, would it even be a valid gain? That is the question Nathan childishly left Max to answer.

Nathan’s problems with Joe Bradley have plagued his Season 11 journey

At the start of Season 11, Nathan explained his personal issues with Joe like this: “Coming toward the end of last season, the way he was treating women was f*cked. I haven’t talked to [Joe] since.” Fair enough. But a good leader puts their personal differences aside for the betterment of the workplace, which Nathan has yet to prove he can do.

Instead, when Nathan first spotted Joe walking down the pier in Episode 1, he went inside. Later, he gave Joe a semi-cold shoulder once they finally came face-to-face. Then, two other deckhands joined the yacht, both with far less experience than Joe. Still unable to move past his feelings, Nathan tried to give one of them the lead deckhand position instead.

Captain Sandy smartly reminded Nathan not to lead with his emotions and to sit on this decision before moving forward. Ultimately, Nathan conceded and realized she was right. A few episodes later, though, Nathan overheard Joe talking about Gael Cameron. Without gathering any facts, Nathan flew off the handle at Joe, proving once again that he’s unable to separate the personal from the professional this season.

Should Nathan Gallagher be axed from the Below Deck Mediterranean cast?

Cooper Dawson is also struggling with Nathan. In Episode 8, which carried over into Episode 9, Nathan returned to the boat late. Captain Sandy reprimanded him. And afterward, with his emotions already heightened, he snapped at Cooper and Joe’s efforts, saying, “For f*ck’s sake, man.”

The night before, Joe and Cooper saved the yacht from mishap during a treacherous storm. These two have to work overtime whenever Nathan steps away. So it was understandable when Cooper explained, “I hate it when [Nathan] says that and we’re f*cking working our asses off.” Then Nathan snapped at them again, giving them their “final warning” for exchanging smiles as they worked.

Nathan must have had an inkling of how fans might react following the most recent episode of Below Deck Med. On his Instagram Stories, he posted a reel saying he “was just trying to make a few positive changes,” and thanking his “supportive” fans. He also hinted that he’ll be stepping away from sharing so much in the public eye.

But is this enough? Or has his Below Deck Med ship fully sailed?

Below Deck Mediterranean is streaming on Peacock.
