Richard Gere has found himself in hot water after he was spotted filming his upcoming rom-com project, Asymmetry. The veteran actor faced backlash after it emerged that his co-star, Diana Silvers, is significantly younger than he is, as they filmed an intimate scene.
Some social media users were not impressed with the big age gap, which some believe is becoming more common in Hollywood. While the primary concern is the film’s controversial theme, Gere’s real-life relationship also drew backlash.
Richard Gere’s Asymmetry Causes Outrage on Social Media
According to Radar, Richard Gere and Diana Silvers are the main cast members of Asymmetry, an adaptation of Lisa Halliday’s 2018 novel. The actors were filming a scene for the film in which they go on an ice cream date and sit together on a park bench
A source told the outlet that Gere and Silvers’ age difference is “impossible to miss,” and remains fundamental to the story. They explained, “The relationship between this celebrated older writer and a much younger woman is supposed to make audiences think about the imbalance between them.”
However, the premise had the opposite effect, sparking criticism that the film was “Hollywood promoting yet another male-centric age-gap romance.” The film’s logline states that they “create a private world just for two,” as Ezra Blazer (played by Richard Gere) and Alice (played by Diana Silvers) start an affair after he finds a safe place in her.
The backlash against the film was even stronger because Gere’s third wife, Alejandra Silva, is 43 years old, making her 33 years younger than her husband. Additionally, his first wife, Cindy Crawford, said on Oprah’s Master Class (via Daily News) that their 17-year age gap played a huge role in their split.
“I think I was more willing at 22 to be, like, ‘Okay, I’ll follow,’” she said. “But then you start going, ‘Well, I don’t want to just follow — I want to lead sometimes and I want to walk side by side sometimes.’”

The film is written, directed, and produced by Edward Zwick, who directed movies like About Last Night, Legends of the Fall, and The Last Samurai. He also won an Academy Award as a producer of Shakespeare in Love.
‘The Age Gap Is Bigger Than My Student Loan Debt’
The news of Gere having a significantly younger actress in the rom-com film spread across the internet like wildfire, as critics questioned the film’s portrayal of romance. Some online users expressed displeasure toward the film’s theme and bombarded it with criticism.
A user tweeted, “He was nearly fifty when she was born, but Hollywood calls it romance.” Another user asked, “Were there kissing scenes in the movie? Were there, God forbid, [explicit] scenes? That poor actress should have earned an Oscar. The idea is absolutely gut turning!”
A user noted, “Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY wants to see this.” A user joked, “The age gap is bigger than my student loan debt.” A user commented, “Insane age gap.” However, not everyone criticized the film’s unorthodox theme and defended it.
“Hey, if they want to be weird, let them be weird, right? As long as they’re not forcing others to be like their weirdness, it’s all good,” a user remarked. Another user said, “I really dont know why anyone cares what other people do in their life; it’s not affecting you at all. We get it, your lives s***, don’t take it out on others.”
