The actress, 40, spoke with PEOPLE about designing her daughters' new playroom, which she crafted in partnership with Crate & Kids. Annable, who is mom to daughters Charlie, 10, and Andi, 3, with husband Dave Annable, explains what was most important to her to include — and how her little ones have been using the space.

"Our playroom sits on our main level in the house, and it sits right off our living room," Annable explains. "We took the doors off, and you can't even tell that there were doors ever there because it's such an intentional place for the kids to play now, which I love so much."

"But because of that, I really wanted it to feel cohesive to the rest of the home so that it didn't feel like a complete shock, that it's like all of these kids toys and just everything thrown up everywhere," she continues. "I knew that I needed to have something super functional, but I wanted it to be really aesthetically beautiful."

Annable, who explains that she loves home design and interiors, noted that she had two really distinct ages to design for (her older daughter Charlie is 10, while her younger daughter Andi is 3).

"One, my oldest daughter, she's 10-years old, so she's not into super, super girly things. And then my youngest daughter is all sparkles and pink and everything, but then you have me to consider as well," she says. "So it's like three ladies all different ages who plan on being in there all the time."

The mom of two says it was important to her that the playroom felt elevated, but also still playful. She leaned into pops of color to help cultivate that vibe.

"The colors that I've always been drawn to have been more earth-tone colors, but I wanted it to have a little bit of a pop," Annable says. "So we went with this really beautiful wallpaper that just brought everything together."

"The rug that we chose...is so great, specifically because we live in Texas. I love horses," she continues. "There's a beautiful horse on it. And the color palette is so great. It's these beautiful yellows and teals, but they're all muted, and blushes."

Annable took all of her ideas and worked with the Design Desk Pro at Crate & Barrel to help see her vision actualized.

"The [Design Desk Pro] at Crate & Barrel is so incredible about pulling that design really intentionally together. And I had my inspiration, and I pulled some pieces that I loved and they incorporated that, but then blew it out of the water," she says.

When thinking about what she wanted to include in the playroom, Annable knew there was one personal touch that would make it extra special.

"I specifically wanted three photos in the playroom, and I wanted them to feel pretty significant in size because I didn't want to clutter the walls any further," she explains. "So I wanted an individual photo of each of the girls and then one together in the middle just to give them each their own thing, but then see them together."

The photos were placed in a special frames, which Annable says were "grounded...even more with the cutest sconces on either side."

"It feels like an English cottage slash Austin, Texas heritage home," she adds. "It's so cute. I'm so excited for people to see this playroom because it feels really different."

Annable also knew that she wanted the space to function as a guest room when it needed to be, so she pulled some pieces that would could perform double-duty.

"I needed to have a place for people to sleep, which I didn't know what I wanted that to look like, but a daybed in my mind fit the bill," she says. "What [Crate & Kids] brought to the table is this beautiful linen daybed, but it also has a trundle, which gave me even more sleeping space."

"And the girls have since had slumber parties in their playroom because each one sleeps on the top and one sleeps on the bottom, so that was really important to me," adds Annable.

She also ensured that there was plenty of space for her kids' toys to be stored, as well as a bookcase to house all of the family's books.

As her kids have settled into their new playroom, Annable says they're loving just spending time with each other.

"We've had the Crate & Kids Art Easel for a long time, actually. And it's one of those things that the girls play with the most," she says. "It's got a chalkboard on one side and then a whiteboard on the other, and then it has enough space to pull some paper over and paint."

"And Charlie thinks that she's Andi's mom. She's like, 'I'm going to take care of you. I'll be your teacher. I'll give you food. I'll get you dressed. You don't have a mom, it's me,'" continues Annable. "And it's so cute because Andi really goes along with it. She's just like, 'This is my big sister and she's the best.'"

"And I never thought when I had two kids with such a big age gap that they'd be able to come together in this way and have their imagination thrive through functional design. And I think it really is because of the pieces that Crate & Kids have that really open the kids' minds to play."
