Oppenheimer and Supergirl actor David Krumholtz has announced he is taking an indefinite break from acting after 30 years in the profession, which he said has ā€œlost its gleamā€.

The American actor, 48, added that he’s been left feeling ā€œfed upā€ and ā€œfrustratedā€ and that he’d been weighing up his decision for a while, but felt relieved when he officially put his career on hold.

ā€œI kinda sorta put my acting career on hold the other day,ā€ he wrote on Threads. ā€œIt’s been something I’ve been petrified to do for years. Specifically, the fear was that I’d go broke and not be able to handle being out of the game. But I sent the definitive email. And gotta say, a huge wave of relief washed over me.ā€

He added: ā€œNot sure what I’m going to do for money instead, or how I’m going to do it, but I just removed a humongous burden, one that I truly didn’t fathom the weight of until it was gone. Frustrated, fed up, fried.ā€

His post generated an outpouring of love from his peers, to whom he clarified: ā€œI’m not quitting entirely. Just taking a bit of a step back and an indefinite break. The stress of the moment has me wondering if there’s a higher calling to pursue. Thanks for the very kind thought. Means the world.ā€

He has since appeared to delete them. The Independent has contacted Krumholtz for comment.

Krumholtz is a character actor whose presence improves a project he’s in. He began acting at the age of 13 after following his friends to an open Broadway audition in 1992, and won a role in Conversations with My Father opposite Judd Hirsch and Tony Shalhoub.

Two years later, he was a film and TV star, appearing in the Santa Clause franchise as head elf Barnard, Ang Lee drama The Ice Storm (1998) and romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You (2000) starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger.

He also had memorable roles in Freaks and Geeks and ER, in which he played a schizophrenic patient at the heart of one of the medical drama’s biggest episodes.

In the 2000s, he had supporting roles in Ray (2004), Superbad (2007), Hail, Caesar! (2016) and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), as well as TV shows from The Wire creator David Simon: The Deuce (2017-19) and The Plot Against America (2020).

In 2023, he starred in Christopher Nolan’s Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer, playing physicist Isidor Isaac Rabi, and this year, he appeared in the box office flop Supergirl, playing the lead character’s father, Zor-El.

In response to the ā€œoverwhelmingly surprisingā€ messages of ā€œlove and encouragementā€ in the wake of his announcement, Krumholtz said: ā€œActing professionally is a very different concept than the exercise of acting itself. I’ve enjoyed every single minute of exercising the muscle. I’ve enjoyed the fanfare.

ā€œThere was a time when being competitive and self-involved really served my pursuit. That time has passed. Much to MY overwhelming surprise. There will always be great joy in the exercise. But for me, the profession has lost its gleam.ā€

When actor Garrett Dillahunt commented he was sad about his decision, but understood it, Krumholtz said: ā€œGarret, man. Means the world. Ain’t over, rather, redefining my terms. Hoping to find a new, more rewarding passion. Me, my product, and I mentality is not working anymore. I want to try to be of service. No crystal ball.ā€

Krumholtz lives in New Jersey with his wife, actor Vanessa Bidding, and their two children.
