Perry Archangelo Bamonte, the London-born musician best known as a member of the Cure, has died, per the group's website.

"IT IS WITH ENORMOUS SADNESS THAT WE CONFIRM THE DEATH OF OUR GREAT FRIEND AND BANDMATE PERRY BAMONTE WHO PASSED AWAY AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS AT HOME OVER CHRISTMAS," read the all-caps note next to a moody image of Bamonte playing a guitar.

Bamonte, who began his association with the quintessential "goth" rock band in 1984 as a keyboard and guitar tech, then as lead singer Robert Smith's personal assistant, later joined as a full-time member in 1990. He initially played keyboards, then shifted primarily to guitar, but he also played bass and percussion.

Bamonte's brother, Daryl Bamonte, was an early manager of the band Depeche Mode, and later managed the Cure. He continues to work as a music publisher, record executive, and keyboardist.

The first Cure album that featured Perry Bamonte as a full time member was 1992's *Wish*, which featured the song "Friday I'm In Love," one of the group's most lasting hits.

The Cure's announcement described Bamonte as "quiet, intense, intuitive, constant, and hugely creative." They added that "Teddy" was "a warm hearted and vital part of *The Cure* story."

Bamonte's first tenure with the Cure ended in 2005, when the lineup was slimmed down. Though he was not a member of the group at the time, nor was he a founding member, he did join the rest of the Cure as they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

He rejoined in 2022 for the *Show of a Lost World* concerts that the Cure's website boasted were among the best in the group's history. A recording from that tour was released as a concert film in 2025.

Perhaps surprising considering that the Cure is all about dark clothing, low lighting, and reading Albert Camus, Bamonte spent his off-hours as a fly fisherman; in fact, he was the artistic director of a quarterly British fly fishing journal called *Fly Culture*.

Bamonte was also a member of Love Amongst Ruin, as bassist, with Steve Hewitt of the band Placebo and Donald Ross Skinner, a collaborator of Julian Cope's. They released two albums.

The Cure's original drummer and later keyboardist Lol Tolhurst wrote about his colleague on X, saying "So sad to hear about the passing of Perry Bamonte from The Cure. Perry joined us all as my keyboard tech initially then after working as guitar tech went on to play in the band . A quiet unassuming man he will be missed by many. Cindy and I send our love to his family."

In 2024, the Cure's Roger O'Donnell announced that he had lymphoma.
