Vince Gilligan has a message for Pluribus fans, and it comes with a warning: “Don’t hold your breath.” The Breaking Bad creator explained exactly why Season 2 is taking longer than anyone expected.
Vince Gilligan addresses Pluribus Season 2’s lengthy production timeline
Vince Gilligan recently addressed the lengthy wait for Pluribus Season 2 during an interview with Decider at Televerse. The Breaking Bad creator acknowledged the delay and urged patience from fans. He stated, “It’s going to be a long time. It’s going to be a while. That is not on purpose. That is not to make the fans frustrated with us.”
Gilligan pointed to the show’s complex narrative as a key reason for the extended timeline. He confirmed the creative team has now mapped out the season 2 story. However, he noted the scripts remain in progress and filming has not yet begun.
The logistical demands of production also contribute significantly to the delay. Pluribus follows a worldwide event, requiring shoots across multiple international locations. Gilligan explained, “We have to range all over the world, which is fun, but it takes a lot of planning, takes a lot of scheduling.”

Additionally, the post-production process presents a unique and time-consuming challenge for the series. Artists must digitally erase background details that would break immersion in the depopulated world. Gilligan described this work by saying, “In every shot, we have to erase the background… There’s always some car in the background that an artist has to digitally erase or someone walking in the background.”
He also shared a humorous exchange about his mother’s impatience with the timeline. Gilligan revealed, “She’s always saying, ‘I’m not going to live to see this damn season 2 of yours.’ And I say, ‘Mom, we’re working as fast as we can.'” He then directly asked viewers to “please bear with us. Don’t hold your breath; it’s going to be a while.”
Apple TV ordered Pluribus Season 2 alongside Season 1, and late 2028 remains the earliest estimated return window. The first season earned 18 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and holds a 99% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
