Prince William Reveals He Is Not “in a Calm State” While at the BAFTAs

Prince William and Kate Middleton are attending the BAFTAs amid a royal crisis surrounding the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (former Prince Andrew) on suspicion of misconduct in public office, and calls for him to be removed from the line of succession. (He denies all wrongdoing.)

While the Waleses ignored a heckler who asked them “is the monarchy in peril?” on the red carpet, Prince William did offer a surprisingly honest look into his current mental state. He said Kate watched Hamnet last night, leaving her in “floods of tears,” but he was not able to. “I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment,” the Prince of Wales said. “I will save it.”

Watching Hamnet before the BAFTAs, Kate joked, “was a bad idea, actually.” She added she “ended up with very puffy eyes. It was so beautifully shot. The music as well. The score is fantastic.” William also admitted he hadn’t seen Marty Supreme, another nominee tonight, but did watch One Battle After Another, saying, “that was very good. We were not expecting it to start the way it did.” Sinners, a frontrunner at the BAFTAs, he described as “a bit dark.”

His mental headspace is likely related to his uncle Andrew, though he did not comment on the events of last week. It is understood, rather, that the Prince and Princess of Wales agree with King Charles’s statement, where he wrote in part, “The law must take its course… it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
