Competition is heating up in season 42 ofThe Challenge, which premiered on Aug. 5 on Paramount+.

Dubbed The Challenge: Cutthroat, this summer’s rendition of the long-running series features three teams of reality TV stars competing for a grand prize of $500,000.

Season 42 introduced six new rookie candidates in addition to some notable veterans of The Challenge franchise, including seven-time champion Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio.

“I have a love-hate relationship with The Challenge because I’ve done so many amazing things,” he told PEOPLE shortly after the season premiere. “... But I mean, man, every time, it doesn’t get easier; put it that way.”

The Cutthroat format was last seen in 2010, which ultimately crowned four winners: Brad Fiorenza, Dunbar Merrill, Tori Gwinn and Tyler Duckworth. Duckworth later died at the age of 44 in August 2026. Fiorenza, meanwhile, returned to the show this season and was eliminated in episode 3.

Season 42 of The Challenge premiered on Aug. 5 on Paramount+. The long-running series previously aired on MTV from 1998 to 2025.

“The competition has gotten fiercer,” Devenanzio told PEOPLE of this season’s stars. “They’ve gotten more athletic. They’ve gotten younger. So every season it’s just like, do I have the ability to do what it takes?”

The show’s previous season, The Challenge: Vets & New Threats, began with a launch special followed by 19 regular episodes and a two-part reunion special.
